Wisdom Allies is an intergenerational initiative based at St Michael’s Parish Church, Edinburgh, connecting across generations through shared wisdom.

It forms part of the church’s wider life of welcome and community, connecting younger people, particularly those without family nearby, with older members who have time, experience and wisdom to share.

I have the privilege of helping to facilitate and develop this initiative as part of my ministry in training.

What is Wisdom Allies?

Wisdom Allies is about simple, meaningful connection across generations.

In a world where many younger people live far from family, and where older members of our communities can sometimes feel overlooked, this initiative offers a space to share time, conversation, and friendship.

It is not a formal programme or service, but a gentle, relational way of bringing people together.

Who is it for?

Wisdom Allies brings together:

• Younger people, particularly students or those without family nearby
• Older members of the church and wider community who have time, experience and wisdom to share

At its heart, this is about mutual encouragement, learning, and companionship.

How does it work?

Wisdom Allies gathers as a group once a month at St Michael’s, offering a relaxed and welcoming space to meet, talk, and get to know one another.

Tea, coffee and cake are always part of the gathering.

There is no pressure or expectation, only an invitation to take part in a way that feels comfortable, and to build connection over time.

A shared commitment

Wisdom Allies is rooted in care, respect, and safeguarding.

The initiative is supported through the frameworks, training and guidance of Linking Lives UK, alongside the safeguarding practices of St Michael’s Parish Church.
